English as an Additional Language (EAL) at Summerhill offers a dynamic and comprehensive English learning experience in a vibrant and welcoming environment at the heart of the school. Lessons are available for non-native English speakers of all ages and levels.
These sessions complement formal English classes and aim to support and prepare international students to follow and actively participate in any content-based courses taught in English. The focus is on enhancing the four essential skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students expand their vocabulary across various topics and subjects, and engage in in-depth discussions of grammar and other elements of the language. Lessons offer a flexible and engaging learning experience, often following the student’s own interests and adopting a learner-centred approach.
Normally, English is used exclusively in EAL lessons, but bilingual dictionaries and online translators are available to use, to ensure that everyone feels comfortable and well-supported, even if they do not speak much English at the beginning of their studies at Summerhill. Over time, students may prepare to take GCSE examinations in English; alternatively, they may choose to prepare for international language exams such as IELTS, ISE, or any of the Cambridge English Qualifications.
EAL is an important part of the school curriculum, ensuring that all international students have the necessary skills to access whatever the school has to offer them.
